Diagnostic Characteristics (within the trailing taxa): Flower size, small, 1-1.5 cm diameter. Petals 4 (sometimes 5). Upper leaves usually 3 parted. Lower leaves 5 parted. Leaflets relatively broad, with 5-9 teeth on upper 1/2-2/3.

Diagnostic Characteristics (within P. anserina complex): Leaflets 3-15 per side. Teeth on side of each leaflet: 6-8. Leaf underside silvery-silky; stolons, peduncles, petioles and leaf rachises more or less silky HAIRY with ascending or loosely spreading hairs.

Diagnostic Characteristics (within P. anserina complex): Leaflets 3-15 per side. Teeth on side of each leaflet: 6-9. Leaf underside white-tomentose (hairy) to glabrate (becoming smooth); stolons, peduncles, petioles and leaf rachises more or less glabrous (smooth).
