Amelanchier is a VERY DIFFICULT genus! It is still not completely understood.

Diploid taxa (which are sexual and self-incompatable) tend to be well characterized. However, polyploid taxa (which are primarily asexual, self-compatable, "apomicts", normally reproducing clonally via seeds) tend to be rather maddening. Moreover, many taxa (primarily the polyploids) hybridize readily.

It should also be appreciated that many individual plants/clones cannot be identified satisfactorily using purely morphological characters. The following treatment is thus very far from being satisfying, and is definitely a "WORK IN PROGRESS". It should be considered as such. All help towards improving the treatment will be greatly appreciated!

See the essential website provided by Christopher Campbell, the present authority on North American Amelanchier: Amelanchier Systematics and Evolution

For Newfoundland and Labrador, sets of "Diagnostic Characters" are provided, below, for each taxon apparently present.
